My favorite part of Church was the prayers. I still look forward to discovering those I can find with my LDS personal study. 

I call it my hobby of Collecting Prayers.    

Which is an extension of how I pray; I learned in Primary in Green River, Wyoming (about 1956) to look toward the throne of God when I pray, with and then beyond the concourses of angels praying and singing praise to Him. 

I like to capture them occasionally onto my iPhone Lockscreen wallpaper and get “try again” to come up.

As Jesus taught us through His associations and interactions, you don’t have to resemble others to respect them and to show loving kindness. In this ever-increasingly divided world in which we live, where “interest groups, political camps, cultural factions and religious organizations are advancing their own vision of good,” differences will persist. It’s just life. But as followers of Jesus Christ, if we are to be the “light of the world,” a beacon of goodness, we need to do as the gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us. We need to love, be kind, avoid contention, be patient, reserve judgment for God, and forgive—over and over again.

In this increasingly divided world in which we live, differences will persist. But as followers of Jesus Christ, we need to love, reserve judgment, and forgive.

I did not need the Book of Mormon to gain my testimony, I did not get one until a couple of years later when attending Seminary; in our Relief Society room before school, middle of Nebraska, rain or snow. A couple of times we got to school in the snow only to find out that it was cancelled.

As we listen to the messages of this conference, we will be touched in our hearts and make resolutions and commitments to do better. But on Monday morning we will return to work, school, neighborhoods, and to a world that in many cases is in turmoil. Many in this world are afraid and angry with one another. While we understand these feelings, we need to be civil in our discourse and respectful in our interactions. This is especially true when we disagree. The Savior taught us to love even our enemies.13 The vast majority of our members heed this counsel. Yet there are some who feel that venting their personal anger or deeply held opinions is more important than conducting themselves as Jesus Christ lived and taught. I invite each one of us individually to recognize that how we disagree is a real measure of who we are and whether we truly follow the Savior. It is appropriate to disagree, but it is not appropriate to be disagreeable. Violence and vandalism are not the answer to our disagreements. If we show love and respect even in adverse circumstances, we become more like Christ.

There is another special way disciples show their love for the Savior. Today I pay tribute to all who serve the Lord as caregivers. How the Lord loves you! In your quiet, unheralded service, you are following Him who promised, “Thy Father who seeth in secret, himself shall reward thee openly.”14

I think of my neighbor whose wife was afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. Every Sunday he would help her dress for Church meetings, comb her hair, apply her makeup, even put on her earrings. In rendering this service, he was an example to every man and woman in our ward—in fact, for the world. One day his wife said to him, “I just want to see my husband again and be with him.”

He answered, “I am your husband.”

And she sweetly replied, “Oh, good!”

I cannot speak of giving care without acknowledging the special caregiver in my life—the Savior’s special disciple to me—my eternal companion, Mary. She has given all in compassionate nurturing and love. Her hands reflect His gentle, sustaining touch. I would not be here without her. And with her, I will be able to endure to the end and be with her in eternal life.
