My mission helped me. My patient companions let me read alone to them for way too long. Ok, sometimes they slept. And we would critique each other as we gave the word-perfect memorized discussions. A Mrs Brown would pop out, and get corrected; my new companions would follow along from their copy. We had a guy say he was in a hurry, so we did both parts high speed; then we asked how that was for him and he said he quick smoking in the middle, he did, we left with his smokes (a guy on the corner offered to buy them, so we traded for the address and time Church started, he showed with friends who sang loudly interesting extra overlaps and one stood and shared, not intelligibly and may have been a foreign language).

(Charles Ommanney/The Washington Post) Nearly 225 years after the ratification of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the cause of conscience protected by the principles of “no establishment” and “free exercise” may be losing support in the minds and hearts of the American people. Appeals by religious individuals and groups for exemption from government laws and regulations that substantially burden religious practice are increasingly unpopular and controversial. So much so that many in the media have taken to using scare quotes, transforming religious freedom into “religious freedom.” Now the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights appears to be recommending that we make it official: Our first freedom is first no more. According to a commission report released Sept. 7, “civil rights protections ensuring nondiscrimination, as embodied in the Constitution, laws, and policies, are of preeminent importance in American jurisprudence.” If we accept this assertion, it means that conflicts between religious freedom and nondiscrimination principles are resolved by denying accommodation for religious conscience – except perhaps in very rare and narrow circumstances. According to the findings of the commission: “Religious exemptions to the protections of civil rights based upon classifications such as race, color, national origin, sex, disability status, sexual orientation, and gender identity, when they are permissible, significantly infringe upon those civil rights.” The findings and recommendations of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights – an independent, bipartisan, fact-finding federal agency – carry weight with government officials responsible for national civil rights policy and enforcement. Robust protection for civil rights is, of course, essential in a democratic society. But so is protection for liberty of conscience. Despite dark chapters of religious discrimination, the United States has a long and honorable history of taking claims of conscience seriously.

At a religious freedom conference for Latter-day Saints in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas, Elder Dallin H. Oaks encouraged members to get involved “in a constructive way in the vital contest for religious freedom.” Emphasizing messages he has shared previously, he counseled local Mormons to seek a cease-fire in the culture wars and to employ a “fairness for all” approach in defending religious freedom because our pluralistic world requires we “live peacefully” with each other. Elder Oaks, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was joined by Church general counsel Elder Lance B. Wickman and Elder Von G. Keetch of the Seventy. Their comments at this regional religious freedom conference (the first of its kind) coincide with the creation of a religious freedom page on LDS.org. Although religious freedom may seem a subject more fit for those with law and political science degrees, Elder Oaks said “literally everyone, from kindergarten children through the ranks of professionals and mothers and fathers and friends and neighbors can and should understand what religious freedom is and why it is important.” Elder Wickman recited a brief history of the struggle that was the creation of the United States Constitution, and he reminded Mormons that in addition to belonging to a church they are also citizens. It is “we the people” who are to “do the hard work of citizenship that is necessary to protect and preserve rights so painfully established” in America, he said. Like Elder Oaks, Elder Wickman urged Latter-day Saints to actively participate in today’s religious freedom discussions. He said the most important freedoms to protect are “those that relate to private and ecclesiastical contexts, or are part of the rights of all citizens.
